Direction of Rotations for Single Notes
To sense the free rotation of the forearm, try this simple exercise. Close the fallboard, or do this on a table. Keeping elbow in one spot as you rotate the forearm, swing the thumb into the air and back to the fallboard. You will notice the elbow stays in one spot.
