The opening Grave is in common time, thus we feel 4 beats in a bar (until the Allegro di molto e con brio, when we need to notice the all breve (2/2) time signature and feel 2 beats in a bar. In this video I explore the problems of pulse in the opening four bars (as well as in bar 9, a rhythmic trap many fall into), the articulation of the dotted rhythms and the dramatic dialogue between two contrasting characters. I also point out some interesting harmonic features.
