The quickest fingering for the descending chromatic scale is the one that uses the least number of thumbs. The principle is a group of four notes (fingered from 4-1) wherever possible, except when to do so would bring the thumb onto a black key – in which case, use a group of three notes (fingered from 3-1). The LH chord may be spread. Make sure to hold the pedal for at least two bars (37-38) to capture the full resonance of this climactic passage.
