Observe the phrase structure, in which the short phrases cross the metrical hierarchy of the time signature creating a beautiful hemiola-like effect (strong-weak, strong-weak, strong-weak). The pedal point A (from bar 38 to this point) now falls, bringing back the farewell motive (A-G#-F#). A long pedal works well here (see footnote 15).
