Whether you are starting out, returning after a break, rebuilding after injury or simply feel that gaps or ingrained habits may be limiting your progress, this practical workshop offers a chance to reassess your technical foundations and find a healthier way forward.

Penelope Roskell will focus particularly on how to identify what may be holding you back and make changes that last. Rather than starting again from scratch, you'll learn how to build on what you already have and create stronger foundations for easier, freer and more sustainable playing.

What Will Be Covered

How to identify technical and physical problems and their underlying causes.

Recognising physical imbalances, unnecessary effort, tension and inefficient movement.

Making simple, manageable changes and using healthy practice methods to help those changes last.

Building healthier foundations of balance, alignment and coordination, and connecting physical ease with sound and expression.

Practical examples including posture and healthy use of the body, warming up effectively and the Parachute Touch for exploring the use of arm weight.

Who It's For

This workshop is suitable for adult pianists at a range of stages, including:

beginners who want to establish healthy foundations from the outset;

pianists returning after a break or interruption;

players who want to address old habits or gaps in their technique;

pianists experiencing tension, fatigue, stiffness or discomfort;

players whose technique feels effortful, unreliable or physically uncertain;

pianists who have reached a plateau and suspect technical foundations may be part of the problem.

It will also be relevant to teachers looking for practical ideas to support healthier technique with adult pupils.

You don't need to be returning to the piano to benefit: the workshop is also useful if you've been playing for some time but want to reconsider or rebuild aspects of your technique.

How It Works

Penelope will explain and demonstrate principles, exercises and experiments that you can try at your own piano during the session or explore afterwards.

There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.

After the workshop, you will receive a small selection of follow-up activities and lessons from Foundations in Piano Technique to help you continue exploring the ideas covered in the session.
