3. Measures 23 – 30

Here we arrive at the second theme area, in D major. The first eight measures of this section are in fact a pair of variations on the simple outline below. Despite the contour of this outline (down for two bars, then up), a sense of harmonic gravity suggests a crescendo to the third measure, followed by a diminuendo to the final bar.
