Using Technical Exercises and Studies Effectively

06 Feb 2021 @ 14:00 GMT

In the piano world there are two opposing schools of thought - those who believe in studying technique from abstract exercises and studies and applying it across to pieces, and those who prefer to develop technique through the repertoire itself, and consider studies and exercises an old-fashioned waste of time.

As with any exercise or study, it’s how you do them that matters, and it is possible to find a middle path through this polemic subject. In this workshop, Graham will explore old chestnuts, such as Hanon, Pischna, Tankard etc., demonstrating:

  • How these might be done to get the best results
  • How not to do them
  • How to fit these into a structured practice routine

We will also look at:

  • The differences between studies and exercises
  • How to invent your own exercises from within a piece
  • How to avoid tension and injury

This workshop is suitable for pianists from elementary to advanced levels and teachers. The session will be recorded and all participants will receive a link to download the video. Therefore, if you are unable to attend the session on the day, you will still be able to watch the video at your convenience.

Additional content

Also included in this workshop is access to Graham's Online Academy module on the basics of technique which uses videos to demonstrate how to move in natural ways to achieve the physical freedom required for playing that sounds and feels good. It serves as a good starting point for beginners and will also be useful for teachers or those seeking a refresher on the basics.
