Applying the Practice Tools to New Pieces

After the success of his recent interactive workshops on the practice tools, in this new workshop Graham will provide a practical demonstration of how to apply these tools when starting work on learning a new piece. The practice tools covered will include:
- How to practise at the speed of no mistakes
- Applying The Three S's (slowly, separately, sections)
- Metronome and chaining techniques to increase speed
- Deconstructing then reconstructing the score
- Identifying tricky spots and coming up with a tool box of strategies to resolve them
- Creative ideas for when we need to repeat a phrase or section
How it works
A list of the repertoire covered will be sent to participants in advance of the workshop, together with links to the scores (where available) so you can have these ready and follow along. Repertoire will range in level from elementary (Grade 1 ABRSM/Trinity) to Grade 8 and beyond.
The workshop will be divided up into a set of topics with an introductory presentation for each followed by a “breakout” session in which you will be able to test out the concepts presented and associated exercises in the privacy of your own home. Worksheets with exercises at various levels will be provided. Graham will be on stand-by to give assistance during the breakout sessions which will then be followed by a group discussion and Q&A.
The session will be recorded and all participants will receive a link to download the video, worksheets and the accompanying presentation. Therefore, if you are unable to attend the session on the day, you will still be able to watch the video at your convenience and work through the exercises and examples.
Who it’s for?
This workshop is suitable for pianists of all levels and will be of interest to piano teachers too. Even if you have attended previous workshops on the subject, Graham's workshops are never scripted, and always include new and different examples. This workshop is ideal for those who wish to deepen their knowledge of the art of practising and expand their portfolio of practice tools.
A new collection of videos on how to go about learning a new piece is also included in the ticket price. In these videos Graham provides a step-by-step process for learning a new piece and demonstrates how various practice tools can be applied to repertoire examples at different levels.
