About This Workshop

The music we choose to play can make an enormous difference to our progress and enjoyment at the piano. Some pieces challenge us to develop new skills or deepen our musical understanding; others introduce us to new composers, styles and musical ideas. And sometimes an unexpected discovery is just what we need to inspire us to try something new.

The new ABRSM Piano Syllabus brings together an intriguing variety of music, from lesser-known works by familiar composers to pieces by composers writing today. While the grades provide a useful indication of difficulty, the repertoire offers possibilities well beyond examination preparation.

In this online workshop, pianist and teacher Jill Morton introduces a carefully chosen selection of pieces from Grades 4–6 of the 2027–2028 syllabus, spanning Lists A, B and C. Jill will guide you through each piece, highlighting its distinctive character and musical interest, while sharing practical ideas and tips for approaching, playing and interpreting the music. She'll also consider how each piece can help develop different aspects of technique and musicianship.

Jill's selections offer a rich variety of styles and musical characters. Along the way, you may find yourself drawn to pieces you wouldn't normally have considered.

Whether you're an intermediate pianist looking for your next piece, a teacher seeking fresh repertoire for students, a developing player looking ahead or a more experienced pianist interested in broadening your repertoire, this workshop offers plenty of ideas and inspiration for what to play next.

A Rich Selection

Jill's selections span a fascinating range of composers and styles, including:

  • Fryderyk Chopin – Polonaise in G minor
  • Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – Chant de l'alouette
  • Florence Price – The Goblin and the Mosquito
  • Francis Faux – The Lonesome Trail
  • Alison Mathews – Buried Rubies
  • Angeline Bell – Lounging by the Pool

These are just some of the works Jill plans to feature, drawn from a wider selection across Lists A, B and C.

What You'll Discover

  • A varied selection of historical and contemporary repertoire from Grades 4–6.
  • What makes Jill's chosen pieces musically distinctive and interesting to learn.

How It Works

The workshop takes place in two 90-minute sessions, with a 30-minute break between them.

Jill will work through a selection of pieces from Lists A, B and C, introducing each work and offering musical insights and practical suggestions for playing and teaching it.

The two sessions form one complete workshop. You are welcome to attend both live, join whichever part you can, or catch up afterwards using the recordings.

Ticket holders will receive separate Zoom registration details for Parts 1 and 2.
